Cour D’Honneur

(from the French, literally “court of honor”), the great courtyard of a palace, manor, or town house, formed by the main building and its projecting wings or colonnades. The cour d’honneur is usually separated from the street, square, or road by an openwork fence with a gate. Cours d’honneurs were common in European palace architecture from the 17th to the first half of the 19th century and in Russia from the early 18th century. They are sometimes used in modern architecture to create grand spatial compositions.
