Chopin, Jean
(Russian, Ivan Ivanovich Shopen). Born 1798 in France; died Aug. 3 (15), 1870, in St. Petersburg. Ethnographer and historian.
Chopin, who was French by birth, moved to Russia in the 1820’s. He worked for many years in the Caucasus. At the behest of the namestnik (vicegerent) of the Caucasus, he compiled a detailed description of the region. Chopin also wrote the important work A Historical Record of the Condition of the Armenian Region at the Time of Its Union With the Russian Empire (1852).
