Location:On Route 174, just off US 1, west of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge.
Facilities:Historic fort, interpretive center, picnic facilities. Open May 1-October 31.
Activities:Guided tours in summer.
Special Features:Fort Knox is New England's finest unmodified specimen of militaryarchitecture and features master granite craftsmanship. Maine's largesthistoric fort as well as the state's first granite fort, it wasconstructed between 1844 and 1864 but was never fully completed. Thefort was strategically located on the narrows of the Penobscot River toprotect the river valley from naval attack and was manned during theCivil and Spanish-American Wars but never saw combat.
