Fort Laramie National Historic Site
(lâr`əmē), 833 acres (337 hectares), SE Wyo.; est. 1938. Founded in 1834 as a fur-trading post by William Sublette and Robert Campbell, it was bought by the American Fur Company in 1836. In 1849 it became a U.S. army post, which later served as a major stopping place on the Overland TrailOverland Trail,any of several trails of westward migration in the United States. The term is sometimes used to mean all the trails westward from the Missouri to the Pacific and sometimes for the central trails only.

Established: Proclaimed as a national monument on July 16, 1938; changed to national historic site on April 29, 1960.
Location:3 miles southwest of the town of Fort Laramie, Wyoming, off US 26.
Facilities:Rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Guided tour, interpretive programs, birdwatching, fishing, hiking.
Special Features:Fort Laramie, on the eastern Wyoming prairie, was a fur-trade post from 1834 to 1849 and a major military post from 1849 to 1890. It figured prominently in the covered wagon migrations to Oregon and California.
