Size: 718 acres.
Established: Authorized on August 31, 1964; established on October 14, 1966.
Location:6 miles west of the city of Larned, Kansas, on KS 156.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Fishing, guided tours, interpretive programs.
Special Features:This military outpost was established midway along the Santa Fe Trail in 1859 to protect the mail and travelers. The fort served as a bureau for the Indian Agency during much of the 1860s and was a key military base of operations during the Indian War of 1868-1869. The fort was deactivated in 1878 and sold at public auction in 1884. The stone buildings are among the best preserved vestiges of the Indian Wars era.
