the standard unit of atomic mass, equal to 1/12 the mass of an atom of the carbon isotope 12C.

Proposed in 1959 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the carbon mass unit was adopted in 1960 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and ratified at the IUPAC congress in 1961. The unit is equal to (1.66043±0.00031) × 10–24g.
