The USSR has eight species, growing in the mountains of Middle Asia; a few species occur in the southern European USSR, the Caucasus, and Siberia. C. tenella grows in steppe and semidesert areas and along slopes in mountain regions; it also occurs as a weed in pastures and wastelands, amid plantings, and near roads and dwellings. The plant is pasturage for camels and sheep.
