[′dis·təns ‚fīnd·iŋ ‚stā·shən] (navigation) A radio beacon equipped with a synchronized sound signal to provide the pilot or marine with a means of determining distance from the source of the sound, by measuring the difference in the time of reception of the two signals; the sound may be transmitted through air or water and from the same location as the radio signal or a location remote from it.
