Asturian Culture

an archaeological culture of the Stone Age, found in northern Spain and Portugal, along the coast of the Bay of Biscay.

The Asturian replaces the Azilian culture and dates from the Late Mesolithic Age. It is represented by large shell heaps of edible sea mollusks, among which are found the bones of modern mammals (including domesticated animals); coarsely flaked hand picks made of quartz flints used to gather mollusks from the rocks along the shore; coarse scraping knives and hatchets; and implements fashioned from deer antlers. Asturian culture sites are generally located near caverns and caves and sometimes within them.
