Darhan

a town in the north of the Mongolian People’s Republic, between the Khara-Gol and Sharyn-Gol rivers. It is a special administrative unit, equal to an aimak. Population, 22,800 (1963). Darhan is second only to Ulan-Bator in size and industrial significance in the republic. It is an important station on the Trans-Mongolian Railroad.

In the 1960’s, with the help of the Soviet Union, an industrial power complex was established in Darhan, including the Sharyn-Gol opencut coal mine (over 1 million tons of coal annually) located south of Darhan. Darhan has cement and ferroconcrete plants, a sheepskin-coat factory, a meatpacking plant, a mixed-feed plant, and a grain elevator.
