(real surname Lane-Fox). Born Apr. 14, 1827, at Hope Hall, Yorkshire; died May 4, 1900, in Rushmore, Wiltshire. British archaeologist.

Pitt-Rivers assembled a remarkable collection of weapons and objects of all epochs and peoples, which he donated in 1883 to Oxford University. He conducted numerous excavations in England and Wales, especially between 1880 and 1900, primarily investigating the remains of ancient settlements. He perfected the method of excavation, being one of the first to make use of stratigraphy in archaeology. He published detailed well-illustrated accounts of the excavations.
