court society

court society

the elaboration of etiquette and standards of ‘cultivated’ manners that occurred in the courts of Western European monarchs in the post-feudal era (Norbert ELIAS, Court Society, 1969, trans. 1983). Elias's book details the life of the king and his courtiers during the reign of Louis XIV in France. Elias argues that the growth of court society, whereby a warrior nobility was eventually replaced by a courtly nobility is one instance of a general CIVILIZING PROCESS within European society Court society is therefore a significant social formation and a major step in the development of the modern world.
