People have attempted to communicate with gods and other spirits throughout history, in all cultures in every area of the world. In ancient times, oracles, seers, shamans, and prophets were the intermediaries between this world and the spirit realm. Ancient Egyptian priests and priestesses, Chinese emperors, Shinto shamans, Greek oracles, as well as the founders of major religions claimed to have communicated with spirits and to have received instructions from them.

Dreams, which often seem to be experiences of a parallel spiritual world, have frequently been the medium of communication. The spirits accomplish dream communication in varied ways, however. Sometimes the spirit itself appears in dreams and instructs the dreamer. On other occasions (e.g., in biblical dreams) an emissary such as an angel is sent bearing a message. Yet other times divinities send symbolic dreams, which must be interpreted.
