(Sextus Pompeius Festus), fl. some time between A.D. 100 and 400, Roman lexicographer; his surviving work, On the Meaning of Words, is an abridgment of the lost glossary of Marcus Verrius Flaccus. It is important as a primary source for Roman scholarship and Roman antiquities. Paul the DeaconPaul the Deacon,c.725–799?, Lombard historian. He received a good education, probably at Pavia, and he learned Latin thoroughly and some Greek. He lived at Monte Cassino and at Charlemagne's court.
