book louse[′bu̇k ‚lau̇s] (invertebrate zoology) A common name for a number of insects belonging to the order Psocoptera; important pests in herbaria, museums, and libraries. Book Louse (Troctes divinatorius), an insect of the order Corrodentia. The body, approximately 1 mm long, is pale yellow or white; there are no wings. The book louse is widespread and feeds on plant and animal residue. It frequently lives in houses and can be found in old books—hence the name.
