a district in central Rumania, on the western slopes of the Eastern Carpathians and in the Transylvanian Alps. Area, 3,700 sq km; population, 184,400 (1970). The city of Sfîntul Gheorghe is the district’s administrative center. Covasna produces 0.5 percent of the country’s gross industrial output and 1.1 percent of its gross agricultural output. The most highly developed industries are food (29 percent of the district’s entire industry), forest and wood products (26 percent), and textiles (18 percent). Lignite is mined in the district (approximately 1 million tons in Căpeni and Vîrgi§). The principal crops are wheat, barley, flax, and sugar beets. In 1971 livestock included 74,000 head of cattle, 74,000 head of hogs, and 170,000 head of sheep.
