Christian Boehmer Anfinsen
Anfinsen, Christian Boehmer
Born Mar. 26, 1916, in Monessen, Pa. American biochemist. Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1958); foreign member of the Royal Danish Society (1964).
Anfinsen received degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (1939) and from Harvard University. He was a fellow at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen in 1940, and from 1944 to 1950 he conducted research at the Harvard Medical School, where he was a professor of biochemistry in 1962 and 1963. From 1950 to 1962, Anfinsen directed the laboratory of cellular physiology and metabolism at the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, Md. In 1963 he became director of the laboratory of chemical biology at the National Institute for Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases. His principal works have been concerned with establishing the structure of ribonuclease.
In 1972, Anfinsen shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry with S. Moore and W. Stein.
