Drill Manual
(full title, Drill Manual of the Armed Forces of the USSR), regulations that establish formations for subunits and units, requirements for drill instruction, rules for operating in deployed and march formations, and prebattle procedures. The Drill Manual outlines the duties of personnel before an assembly and in formation, the exercising of drill maneuvers with and without weapons, the rendering of a proper military salute, and the order of conducting drill inspections. It defines the proper placement and display of unit banners in formations and explains how banners should be properly carried to the units and later returned to the place of custody. It governs military units and subunits as well as headquarters, directorates, agencies, and installations. The armed forces of other countries have similar drill manuals. The Drill Manual of Oct. 31,1975, superseded the Drill Manual of 1959.
