Darkshevich, Liverii Osipovich

Born July 17 (29), 1858, in Yaroslavl; died Mar. 28, 1925, in Moscow. Soviet neuropathologist and neurohistologist.

Darkshevich graduated from the department of medicine of Moscow University in 1882 and took his specialty until 1887 in the laboratories and clinics of Western European neurologists. From 1892 he was a professor at the University of Kazan, where he organized a clinic for nervous diseases, as well as the first hospital for alcoholics in Russia. In 1917 he became a professor in the subdepartment of nervous diseases of the First Moscow University and he was head of the State Higher Medical School until 1923. Darkshevich investigated the structure and functions of the anterior monticulus cerebri, epiphysis, stem nuclei, and other brain formations and he diagramed the pupillary fibers of the optic nerve. He was one of the first to point out the syphilitic nature of tabes dorsalis. to conduct research on epidemic encephalitis in the USSR. and to investigate muscle atrophy in diseases of the joints. In 1893. together with V. M. Bekhterev, Darkshevich founded the Society of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists in Kazan.
