A hereditary disorder (OMIM:611407) characterised by ventricular dilation and impaired systolic function, resulting in congestive heart failure, arrhythmia and risk of premature death. 
Molecular pathology
Defects of VCL, which encodes a cytoskeletal protein present in cell–cell and cell–matrix junctions, cause dilated cardiomyopathy type 1W.
