It flows generally N through Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Sava River. There are several high dams on the Drina and its headstreams. Višegrad, a major city along the river, is the setting of the historical novel The Bridge on the Drina by 1961 Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić.DrinaDRIN A, a river in Yugoslavia, a right tributary of the Sava (the Danube Basin). It is 460 km long, with a basin area of 19,600 sq km. Its sources are in the mountains of Montenegro. It flows primarily through a narrow, deep and, in places, forested valley. Below the mouth of the Lim River there are waterfalls. There is high water in the spring and flash flooding in the autumn and winter. In the lower reaches the water flows at an average rate of 341 cu m per sec. There is a hydroelectric power plant on the river. |
