Ashmar, Muhammad

Born 1880; died Mar. 3, 1960. Social leader of Syria and an active participant in the national liberation struggle and the peace movement.

During the Syrian national uprising of 1925–27, Ashmar commanded a partisan division. He participated in the Second World Peace Congress in 1950 and became a member of the World Peace Council in 1953. In 1956 he became chairman of the National Peace Committee of Syria. He was awarded the International Lenin Prize “For Strengthening Peace Among Peoples” (1956).
