European Computer-Industry Research Centre GmbH

(body)(ECRC) A joint research organisation founded in 1984 onthe initiative of three major European manufacturers: Bull(France), ICL (UK) and Siemens (Germany). Its activitieswere intended to enhance the future competitive ability of theEuropean Information Technology industry and thus complementthe work of national and international bodies.

The Centre is intended to be the breeding ground for thoseideas, techniques and products which are essential for thefuture use of electronic information processing. The work ofthe Centre will focus on advanced information processingtechnology for the next generation of computers.

ECRC is an independent company, owned equally by itsshareholders. The formal interface between ECRC and itsshareholders consists of two bodies: The Shareholders'Council, which approves the Centre's programmes and budgetsand supervises their execution and the Scientific AdvisoryBoard, which advises the Shareholders' Council in determiningfuture research directions.

There are many collaborations between ECRC and itsshareholders' companies on specific projects (TechnologyTransfer, prospective studies etc). The Centre is staffed byhighly qualified scientists drawn from different countries.Research staff are hired directly by ECRC, as well as some whocome on assignment from the member companies, and othersseconded from public research agencies and universities.

Seminars are held which bring together specialists from theCentre and the member companies.

ECRC's mission is to pursue research in fundamental areas ofcomputer science. The aim is to develop the theory,methodologies and tools needed to build innovative computerapplications. ECRC contributes actively to the internationaleffort that is expanding the frontiers of knowledge incomputer science. It plays an important role in bridging thegap between research and industry by striving to work at thehighest academic level with a strong industrial focus. ECRCconstitutes an opportunity in Europe for the best scientistsand offers young researchers the possibility to mature in anenvironment which exposes them to both fundamental researchand the process of delivering the results to industry.

ECRC plays an important role in Europe and is involved inseveral European Community initiatives. It is regularlyconsulted by the Commission of the European Communities onstrategic issues, such as the definition of future researchplans, international co-operation and relationships betweenacademia and industry.
