benign misplaced epithelium

benign misplaced epithelium

The presence of benign glands in the submucosa, often due to mechanical artefact of biopsy removal, a finding that can simulate invasion by a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma and result in unnecessary surgery. Benign misplaced epithelium with pools of mucin occurs in adenomatous polyps, as well as in idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, radiation-induced damage and other forms of gastrointestinal prolapse. Benign misplaced epithelium without mucin can be seen in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and colitis cystica profunda.
