Beni-Snassen Uprising of 1859
Beni-Snassen Uprising of 1859
an anti-French uprising by the Beni-Snassen tribes that inhabited the northern regions of the Algerian Atlas Mountains (western Algeria). It was provoked by the rapacious policies of the French authorities, who expropriated the lands of the Algerian tribes. The insurgents stubbornly resisted the French colonizers for several months, but after a difficult struggle they were defeated by the troops of General Matimprey. The Beni-Snassen Uprising of 1859 was one of the most significant rebellions during the period of the conquest of Algeria.
