Faddeev

an island in the Arctic Ocean, in the Anzhu island group of the Novosibirskie Islands. Faddeev Island has an area of 5,300 sq km and a maximum elevation of 65 m. Edged with extensive silty sandbanks, it is composed of sands, aleurolites, and clays, intruded with veins of underground ice. It abounds in thermokarst lakes (cave-in lakes) and small rivers. Moss and lichen vegetation predominates. The island was discovered in 1805 by Ia. Sannikov and named after the industrialist Faddeev, who built the first wintering quarters there. There is trapping for blue fox on the island.
