Care Standards Act 2000

A UK Act that set standards for agencies and bodies involved in child care.
The Act did the following:
• Established a National Care Standards Commission.
• Made provisions for the registration and regulation of children’s homes, independent hospitals, independent clinics, care homes, residential family centres, independent medical agencies, domiciliary care agencies, fostering agencies, nurses’ agencies and voluntary adoption agencies.
• Made provisions for the regulation and inspection of local authority fostering and adoption services.
• Established a General Social Care Council and a Care Council for Wales, and made provisions for the registration, regulation and training of social care workers, and the establishment of a Children’s Commissioner for Wales.
• Made provisions for the registration, regulation and training of those providing child minding or day care.
• Made provisions for the protection of children and vulnerable adults, to amend the law regarding children looked after in schools and colleges, and to repeal the Nurses Agencies Act 1957.
• Amended Schedule 1 to the Local Authority Social Services Act 1970.
