Carey, Joseph Maull

(1845–1924) U.S. senator; born in Milton, Del. A prosperous rancher and a judge on the Supreme Court of Wyoming (1872–76), he was elected territorial representative to Congress (Rep., Wyo.; 1885–90). Having introduced the bill for admitting Wyoming as a state, he then became its first U.S. senator (1890–95) and finally its governor (Dem., 1911–15).
