Boris and Gleb Monastery

in the settlement of Borisoglebskii, near the city of Rostov, Yaroslavl Oblast. Russian architectural monument.

Founded at the end of the 14th century, the Boris and Gleb Monastery was built in the first half of the 16th century. The Cathedral of Boris and Gleb (1522–24, ascribed to the architect G. Borisov), a refectory (with the Blagoveshchenie Church; 1524–26; architect, G. Borisov; rebuilt in the 17th century), cells (16th century), and a belfry (1680) surround the central rectangular courtyard. The Boris and Gleb Monastery is surrounded by walls with 14 towers, as well as two 17th-century churches built above the gates. The walls, rectangular in arrangement with symmetrically placed gates and towers, give the ensemble an appearance of regularity, and the free placement of decorative structures introduces an element of picturesqueness.
