A format for oesophageal endoscopy of patients with suspected Barrett’s oesophagus, in which the oesophageal mucosa is painted with toluidine blue—a dye that highlights dysplasia within the metaplastic segment. Other dyes used include Lugol’s iodine, which leaves metaplastic epithelium unstained and is thought to improve demarcation. Indigo carmine is used in Japan. Regardless of the colour, the procedure may not improve detection rates of Barrett’s oesophagus.
