community-service order n (Law) (in Britain) a court order requiring an offender over seventeen years old to do unpaid socially beneficial work under supervision instead of going to prison community-service order
community-service order a form of disposal in UK criminal justice by which an offender may be ordered to do work in the community without payment if the offence was one that could have been punished by imprisonment. The work is to be done within 12 months and the maximum number of hours is 240. Its availability depends upon local authorities having schemes available. |
