Daskalov, Raiko Ivanov

Born Dec. 9, 1886, in the village of Biala-Cherkva, Turnovo Okrug; died Aug. 26. 1923, in Prague. Bulgarian politician.

Daskalov was a journalist by profession. He was one of the leaders of the left wing of the Bulgarian National Agricultural Union. From 1915 to 1918, he was in prison for antiwar speeches. He actively participated in the Vladaia uprising of 1918 and sponsored the declaration of the so-called Radomir Republic by rebelling soldiers on Sept. 27, 1918. He was a member of A. Stamboliiskii’s government from 1919 to 1923; in 1923 he became an ambassador to Czechoslovakia. After the June 9. 1923, fascist uprising, he attempted to head the struggle against the fascist government of Tsankov; he was killed in Prague by one of Tsankov’s agents.
