Iarustovskii, Boris Mikhailovich

 

Born May 2 (15), 1911, in Moscow; died there July 12, 1978. Soviet musicologist. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1966). Doctor of art studies (1952). Member of the CPSU from 1941.

Iarustovskii graduated from the department of music history and theory at the Moscow Conservatory in 1937; in 1941 he completed graduate study at the conservatory under the direction of V. E. Ferman. From 1946 to 1958 he was head of a cultural section of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He became an instructor at the Moscow Conservatory in 1948 and a professor in 1956. In 1959 he became a senior research worker at the Institute for the History of Arts of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR (now the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Art Studies).

Iarustovskii’s principal works dealt with the classical and contemporary musical theater, the development of the Soviet symphony, P. I. Tchaikovsky, and I. F. Stravinsky. Iarustovskii edited the collection /. F. Stravinsky: Articles and Materials (1973). He represented the USSR at international congresses, conferences, and symposiums. He served as secretary of the administrative board of the Composers’ Union of the USSR from 1968 to 1974.

Iarustovskii was awarded three orders and various medals.
