Carlo Rosselli

Rosselli, Carlo

Born Nov. 16, 1899, in Rome; died June 9, 1937, in Bagnoles-de-l’Orne, France. Figure in the Italian antifascist movement.

Rosselli taught social sciences at the Luigi Bocconi Commercial University in Milan and the Higher Institute of Commerce in Genoa. He joined the Unitarian Socialist Party in 1924. Together with his brother, the historian Nello Rosselli, E. Rossi, and G. Salvemini, he published the illegal antifascist newspaper Non Mollare! in 1925. In 1926, with P. Nenni, he published the journal Quarto Stato.

Rosselli was exiled in 1927 for having organized F. Turati’s escape from Italy. In 1929 he fled to Paris, where he founded the antifascist democratic movement Justice and Liberty (Gi-ustizia e Libertà). In 1936 and 1937 he fought in the war against fascism in Spain and was wounded. Rosselli and his brother Nello were killed by French Cagoulards acting in collusion with the Italian Fascist secret service.
