Bortkevich, Genrikh Stanislavovich

 

Born June 25, 1922, in Pskov. An innovator in manufacturing, one of the initiators of high-speed metalworking. Member of the CPSU since 1950.

Bortkevich graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics in 1965. Working as a lathe operator in the la. M. Sverdlov Leningrad Machine Tool Factory he, in cooperation with the plant’s engineers, improved the geometry of the cutting tools and adapted tools with tips made of hard alloys. In 1948 he was one of the first in the USSR to achieve a turning velocity of 700 m/min. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1949. In 1966, Bortkevich became head designer of one of the Leningrad enterprises.
