Engler, Carl Oswald Viktor

Born Jan. 5, 1842, in Weisweil, Germany; died Feb. 7, 1925, in Karlsruhe, Germany. German organic chemist.

Engler graduated from the University of Freiburg in 1864. He became a professor at the University of Halle in 1872, and from 1876 to 1919 he was a professor at the Karlsruhe Polytechnikum. Engler’s principal works dealt with petroleum chemistry and technology; he invented a number of devices to aid the study of petroleum.

Engler became a foreign corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1913.
