Jakobson, Carl Robert

 

Born July 14 (26), 1841, in Tartu; died Mar. 7 (19), 1882, in Kurg’ia. Estonian educator, publicist, and writer.

Jakobson was a teacher by profession. His first publicist works were printed in 1865. Editor of the progressive newspaper Sakala from 1878 to 1882, he became a leader of the Estonian national movement. Jakobson was made head of the Society of Estonian Writers in 1881. He wrote textbooks, including Books for School Reading (parts 1–3, 1867–76). Jakobson translated works by Goethe and Schiller into Estonian.
