In the first half of the 18th century, the principality (or nawabship) of the Carnatic was formed with its capital at Arcot; the principality played an important role in the political life of southern India. From 1746 to 1754, the Carnatic became the arena for a struggle between the French and British East India companies, ending with the victory of the British. The British protege Muhammad All became the ruler of the principality. In 1801 the territory of the Carnatic was included in the Indian province of Madras. After India gained independence in 1947, the Carnatic became part of the state of Madras, which was formed in 1950; in 1969, Madras was renamed Tamil Nadu. |
