Chrysocolla crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It occurs in the form of cryptocrystalline, opal-like, enamel-like, or earthy aggregates and sinter crusts. The color is bright turquoise or bluish green. Dense concretions with malachite and halloysite occur frequently. Chrysocolla has a hardness of 2–4 on Mohs’ scale and a density of 2,200–2,300 kg/m3. A common mineral in the oxidation zone of copper deposits, it indicates the presence of copper ore. Chrysocolla has been found in Chile, the United States, and elsewhere. In the USSR it occurs in the Urals, Transbaikalia, and Kazakhstan. |
