Avanti!

Avanti!

(Forward!), a daily newspaper, the central organ of the Italian United Socialist Party; founded in 1896 as an organ of the Italian socialists. It appears in Rome and Milan and had a circulation of approximately 60,000 in 1968.

Avanti! moved to Paris in 1926 and was published there until the end of the Fascist dictatorship (1922–43). It returned to Italy in June 1944. From 1934 until 1956 the newspaper followed a line of united action for Italian socialists and communists on the basic questions of Italian and international workers’ movements. It then began to gradually abandon this position. In 1966, after the unification of the Italian socialist and the Italian Social Democratic parties, it became the central organ of the Italian United Socialist Party.
