On the northwestern border of MT, north of Missoula; organized Feb 6, 1893 from Missoula County; annexed part of Deer Lodge County before 1900. Name Origin: For the Salish or Flathead Indians of the Catawba group; there is no evidence that they flattened the heads of their infants, as some other tribes did. It has been suggested the name comes from their home at the 'flat' head of the Columbia River rather than in the deep canyons below
