(married name, Sabatier). Born Oct. 28, 1803, in Székesfehérvár, Hungary; died Mar. 23, 1877, in Florence, Italy. Austrian mezzo-soprano.

Unger studied with D. Ronconi, A. Lange, and J. M. Vogl and made her opera debut in Vienna in 1821. Her artistic association with Beethoven was important for her career. She sang at the first performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Missa solemnis. Unger performed in Italy and was an outstanding representative of the bel canto school. She possessed a rich, bright, expressive voice and captivated listeners with her highly emotional and dramatic interpretations. Her roles included Rosina in Rossini’s Barber of Seville and the title roles in Bellini’s Norma and Donizetti’s Anna Bolena.
