Botez, Demostene

Born July 2, 1893, in the village of Khulub, Botosani district. Rumanian poet.

Botez’s creative life was bound up with the journal Viata romînească. His first collections of poems, Flower of the Earth (1920), Tale of Man (1923), and Days of Life (1927), are permeated by melancholy and convey the suffocating atmosphere of the Rumanian provinces. Since the country’s liberation from fascism (1944), his poetry has been filled with optimism and expresses the enthusiasm of the construction of the new society—for example, the collections Sunflower (1948), Years (1958), and In the Face of Time (1967).
