Botryomyces

Botryomyces

(bot'rē-ō-mī'sēz), A generic name applied to a supposed fungus causing botryomycosis. Because this disease is now known to be caused by several kinds of bacteria, staphylococci most commonly, the name is invalid and rarely used. The name of the disease has been retained, nevertheless, to indicate a peculiar type of tissue reaction. [G. botrys, a bunch of grapes, + mykēs, fungus]
