compass swinging

compass swinging

A procedure for calculating and correcting for the effects of an aircraft's magnetic field on its magnetic compass. The aircraft is taken to a designated area where, with all its services that are normally on during a flight, its deviation is measured on various headings and corrections are applied to the compass. A compass correction card is made if any residual deviation is still left. An aircraft is swung at periodic intervals, after a major component change, after a major servicing, or if it is relocated to a significantly different latitude. Maximum accuracy is achieved when the compass swing is done in flight. See also compass correction card and deviation card.
