(formerly Turnu-Severin), a city in southwestern Rumania and a port on the Danube River. Administrative center of the district of Mehedinfi. Population, 67,300 (1974). The city’s industries include shipbuilding, the production of railroad cars, woodworking, garment making, and food processing. The huge Iron Gate hydroelectric power plant is located near the city, in the Djerdap.
