Chulymtsy

a Turkic-speaking territorial group that lived along the middle and lower course of the Chulym River, a tributary of the Ob’. Russians referred to the Chulymtsy as the Chulym Tatars. The group was formed in the 17th and 18th centuries when several Turkic groups had advanced eastward after the fall of the Siberian Khanate. These groups and, partly, Teleut and Enisei Kirghiz mixed with small numbers of Selkups and Ket. The Chulymtsy led a settled way of life, having adopted agriculture and nonnomadic livestock raising from local Russian peasants. The descendants of the Chulymtsy intermingled with the Khakass and with Russians.
