Filatov, Antonin Nikolaevich

 

Born Aug. 4 (17), 1902, in Oranienbaum, now the city of Lomonosov, Leningrad Oblast; died Mar. 7, 1974, in Leningrad. Soviet surgeon and hematologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1966).

Filatov graduated from the medical department of the Second Moscow State University in 1925. In 1932 he joined the staff of the Leningrad Blood Transfusion Institute. During the same period he was director of the surgical subdepartments, first of the Institute of Stomatology and later, through 1960, of the First Leningrad I. P. Pavlov Medical Institute.

Filatov’s principal works deal with blood transfusion and surgery. Filatov developed methods for making possible the wide use of blood plasma and a treatment for hemolytic shock (1932). He performed (1928) the first successful exchange transfusion in the USSR. In 1954 he founded a tissue bank, and in 1957 he performed reconstructive surgery on an atherosclerotic artery. In 1968 he founded a center for thromboembolic conditions. He developed and introduced into medical practice a number of therapeutic preparations of blood and blood substitutes, as well as vascular prostheses of knitted material.

Filatov became honorary chairman of the N. I. Pirogov Surgical Society in 1970. He was a member of the International Society of Surgery (from 1958), the International Society of Hematology (1956), the International Society of Blood Transfusion (1956), and the International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (1969).

Filatov was awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and several medals. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1953 and 1975.
