Born Dec. 20, 1899, in Horten, Norway. American antarctic explorer.
From 1933 to 1935 and from 1939 to 1941, Ronne took part in R. Byrd’s expeditions. In 1947 and 1948 he led an American expedition that, together with a group of British antarctic explorers, discovered Graham Land and the Antarctic Peninsula. Ronne discovered the south shore of the Weddell Sea, which was named Edith Ronne Land in honor of Ronne’s wife and fellow traveler. In 1957 and 1958 he was in charge of the American Ellsworth Station in Antarctica. A bay of the Bellingshausen Sea was named after Ronne.
