(Federal District), an administrative and territorial unit in Argentina, within the city limits of Buenos Aires. The Distrito Federal comprises the part of Buenos Aires that is officially the country’s capital, that is, the metropolitan area without the suburbs. The district has an area of 199,500 sq km and a population of 2,972,500 (1970 census), constituting 35 percent of the population of Greater Buenos Aires.

The Distrito Federal accounts for about one-fourth of Argentina’s industrial output. Industry includes machine building, food processing (chiefly meat-packing), and the production of textiles, garments, chemicals, and electrical equipment. The Distrito Federal is a port and the principal business and trade section of the capital. Government buildings (including the presidential palace) are located in the district, as well as the University of Buenos Aires and other cultural institutions.

The district covers an area of 1,500 sq km and has a population of 8.6 million (1975), constituting 14 percent of the total population of Mexico (4 percent in 1900). The administrative center of the district is Mexico City. By a law enacted on Dec. 29, 1970, the boundaries of the capital, Mexico City, coincide with those of the Distrito Federal. The district is located in the southeastern part of the Meseta Central.

Industry in the Distrito Federal includes machine building, food processing, printing, and the production of chemicals and consumer goods. Power is supplied by oil and gas brought in by pipeline from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1965 the Distrito Federal contributed 35 percent of the country’s gross national product.
